“Why We Love NYC” Partner Spotlight: Appletters

We’re getting ever closer to our 1/25 “Why We Love NYC” pop culture trivia night at Brooklyn’s Bell House, celebrating all things New York as well as our “Special Host” Pat Kiernan’s 15th year as NY1’s morning news anchor. In advance of the occasion, I am highlighting all of the incredible partners who have come together to make this special event possible! (You can also learn more about producing your own trivia party company team building event in NYC).

I discovered Appletters last summer, when we partnered with the extraordinarily popular Bananagrams at our VH1 Save The Music trivia fund raiser. In addition to providing Bananagrams for about 30 or so students who performed at the event from Brooklyn’s PS 58, the first school to receive a VH1 Save The Music grant, some lucky contestants went home with Appletters as well – a similar game with slightly different rules, and of course in a distinctive apple package.

The Bananagrams/Appletters craze can be traced back to Abe Nathanson. Born in 1929 and growing up in Rhode Island, the game’s inventor served in the army before enrolling in Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute to study graphic and industrial design. Following a long, successful career in jewelry design, Abe dove headfirst into his true passion, art and photography, as well as creating several children’s books. But Abe wasn’t finished yet.

In 2006, at the age of 76, the restless entrepreneur created Bananagrams in his garage. Quickly catching fire among children and adults alike, the game was a huge success – eventually winning the prestigious “Game of the Year” award from the Toy Industry Association.

Abe died recently at the age of 80, but his legacy of providing fun, mentally challenging games continues. With Appletters, players can enjoy the creativity and flair of Banangrams across three distinct levels of play, designed to engage both children and adults. With modes of play including “Applescore” and “Apple Turnover,”  the game is perfect for family and friends of all ages.

On January 25th, several lucky participants at our trivia event will get to go home with their very own editions of Appletters – the perfect prize for a fun night of intellectually stimulating trivia about the Big Apple!
