My Event Budget is Very Low – How Can I Entertain My Group?

So you’ve decided to do something special for your office – or your boss has, and you’ve been unceremoniously given the task of planning an event for your colleagues. However, there is a problem: you’ve got very little money with which to do it. What now?

The Big Apple is an expensive place, which everybody knows. It costs a tremendous amount of money just to survive here, let alone spend whatever disposable income you may or may not have available for staff entertainment ideas in NYC. But the question is a real one, and one which I and other owners of New York City corporate team building companies hear from people just like you on a daily basis: what can I possibly do with so little?

The counsel I provide for such inquiries is always the same: what do you want your group to get out of the event? As with every other thing on this planet, you get what you pay for. As is often the case – be it with team building activities, NYC real estate, cars or restaurants, the most desirable option is often the most expensive – and, by default, unavailable to you most of the time, if not always. Most of us here won’t get to eat at Per Se even once, let alone dine there often; however, perhaps there is a special occasion on the horizon such as a wedding anniversary (like mine is today), and you want to do something special?

If your goal is to just go out and have fun, you can do that. Will it be a highly professional, customized or structured event, crafted with your unique group and goals in mind? Probably not – but then again, your goal is just to have fun, right? So go out and have fun!

However, if you have specific team challenges you wish to address, or seek customized activities for corporate groups in NYC, then you might be facing a bit of a challenge. Ask yourself: how important is this event? What are the key elements I wish the group to get out of it? How necessary is it really to hold this event offsite, when we could save a bundle by holding the event here at our office and hire better entertainment?

Nobody wants to pay more than they have to for NYC office entertainment, especially those who’s budgets are already tight as it is. While you could certainly shop around and find the cheapest vendor, is that really the way you want to go? Depending on your goals, perhaps you’d be better off spending your money on drinks and dinner, rather than bring in something that’s of poor quality for sake of doing “something.”
